One mom recently messaged me asking, "I think I have postpartum depression. For me the most difficult thing is to connect with my baby and I feel guilty about it. What can I do to build a strong bond with my two-month-old?" With her permission, I'm sharing her question and my response, as I believe it could help other moms who are experiencing similar struggles:
Dear Mom,
Thank you for reaching out to me on Instagram. I would like to tell you that building a bond with your baby can be challenging, especially when you're experiencing postpartum depression symptoms. It's important to remember that these feelings are common and treatable, and seeking help is the first step towards feeling better.
To help you develop a strong connection with your baby, I'd like to offer some tips:
First, try skin-to-skin contact by holding your baby close. This can release oxytocin, a hormone that promotes bonding and relaxation.
Second, make eye contact with your baby during feeding, diaper changes, or playtime. This can help strengthen the bond between you two.
Third, engage in activities together, such as singing, reading, or playing. These activities can help you feel more connected and also stimulate your baby's development.
Finally, seek support from your partner, family, or friends. Ask for help with childcare or household tasks, and consider joining a support group or talking to a therapist.
Remember, it's okay to ask for help and take care of yourself. Seeking treatment for postpartum depression can also help improve your ability to bond with your baby. You're doing great, and with time and effort, the bond between you and your little one will grow stronger.
Thank you for trusting me with your question, and I hope these tips are helpful to you and other moms who may be going through a similar experience.
Warmly,
Mirian
